See you Sunday!
This week's ride the group will be heading out from Perks Coffee House in Elmira at 8:30am to Conestoga Lake. This route is one of my favorite routes and I ride it as often as I can. Unfortunately, we will need to ride a slightly modified route due to road construction. This means we will be missing a rather large hill in Glen Allen that is always a good one to ride. See you Sunday!

This weekend is likely going to be a busy weekend for cycling. First event that I strongly urge for anyone that has a bike, helmet and a white shirt to attend is the Together We Travel Ride for Angels happening on Saturday. This ride has evolved from memorial ride for cyclist Barrie Conrod to annual event designed to promote cycling safety and sharing the road. This is a short 3km ride for anyone and everyone to participate. You can find more details here. My family and I will be meeting at the parking lot on Seagram Drive at the entrance of Waterloo Park (http://goo.gl/maps/KVCbA) at 4:00pm and riding to the start of the ride - feel free to join us. On Sunday we will once again be meeting for our regular group training ride at Perks Coffee House in Elmira at 8:30am. It is now time to start going uphill a bit more and this route will be perfect for that. The hills are not huge but you will need to work to get over them. Can`t wait to see everyone this weekend!
We could not have asked for a better day for a group ride. We had nine riders meet at Perks in Elmira and quickly got through our 55km route for today. We had a couple of new faces with one of those new riders riding a fixie for the 55km - yes he is a very strong rider. I am already thinking about next week! I was very excited about the route I had planned for us this Sunday as it was going to be the route I ride more often than any others. The route is a perfect 50km route with lots of hills a to start, great scenery along Conestoga Lake and a nice flat finish but when I was there on Monday a big section of the route has been torn up for construction so it will need to wait. My hope is that it will be rideable in time for our Big Summer Ride and BBQ on August 17th. So the new plan is that we ride a route that is nearly the same as last week's ride. I thought this would work as last week only a handful of us decided to ride. The only changes to this week's route is that we will continue through Ariss and turn on 4th Line instead of 8th Line (this had a bit of a rough section to it). Now that we are getting into longer rides be sure to bring lots of fluids and it might be time to start thinking about nutrition while riding. Hope to see you all there! Although it rained for hours just before the start of Sunday's ride once we left Perks the rain stopped. Since it was raining at the start we only had 3 riders out but it was a great ride. Looking forward to next week!
Last year over 500 cyclists dressed in white shirts and gathered near Hawkesville, Ontario for a memorial ride to remember cyclist Barrie Conrod (http://www.flickr.com/photos/waterloocyclingclub/sets/72157629727926732/). Barrie`s life ended tragically when he was struck from behind by a car while out for a bike ride with his wife. This ride was a very powerful event to not only remember Barrie`s life, but also also showed the strength in the cycling community and the importance to remember all those individuals that have been hurt or killed while riding their bikes. This year the ride will not only remember those that have been hurt or killed while cycling but also demonstrate the need for cyclists and drivers to Share the Road! I hope that all cyclists will be eager to show their support and join me and my family for this 3km, police escorted ride in Uptown Waterloo. Here are all the details:

I must apologize that I was late for the group ride (flat tire :() but once I arrived we headed out in perfect weather for cycling. We stuck together as a group for the most part and covered one of my favourite routes in the area. Unfortunately, the roads on this route have deteriorated even more than I remember and it was a bit of a bumpy ride. Other than the rough roads on 8th line it was a great group ride! |
